A Missouri college with special ties to the start of the Cold War are commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall today. Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., was the site of Winston Churchill's Iron Curtain Speech, which historians say marked the start of the Cold War. The revolution that brought down the communist regime in East Germany began in the city of Leipzig, about 100 miles from Berlin. There, a Lutheran pastor and his congregation began holding prayer meetings that eventually grew into massive demonstrations demanding peaceful change. As part of our series Voices of a Revolution, we hear from that pastor, the Rev […]

Projects

On this page we will try to keep you updated on the projects that we are working on in Haiti. It should be noted that these are not neccesarily projects that are currently supported by NWHCM but they are projects that we are looking to get started to some degree or to continue in what NWHCM has already started:

Agriculture Projects:
One of the biggest projects that I (Curtis) want to start is the planting of trees other plants for two main reasons. The first of these reasons is that Haiti has a severe problem with soil erosion and trees are badly needed in order to help solve that problem. This planting of trees on a large scale can also make a difference in climate and global warming. The second reason that I am very interested in agricultural projects is because of food, both raising food for missionaries which would allow us to use funds in other areas, as well as of course raising fruit and other crops for the Haitian people to both consume and sell. This project will include not only planting trees and other crops native to Haiti but also introducing new ones that will help the Haitian people in new ways. We would greatly appreciate the donation of or funding for farming supplies and also seeds which can be found on the internet at stores such as this one. This project may also involve raising and donating farm animals to individuals and communities. Below is an example of a garden used in the Far West.

At this website (ECHO) you can buy seeds, books, and tools for agriculture projects like the ones we want to start. This is a Christian organization and we will rely heavily on their information for our projects. Please consider purchasing a book or a pack of seeds as a way of supporting this project. If you are interested in doing so please contact us and we will let you know which ones will be of the most help.

Water Projects:
Many Haitians have major problems finding access to potable water. The people of the Far West have trouble finding any water at all as the area is prone to sever droughts. Because of this very real and basic need I want to spend alot of time focusing on bringing water to where it is needed. The reasons for this are simple. First of all we must seek to help people who are in need and if we do not do that then we cannot claim to be Christians. Second, it is very hard for a child to learn in school or to function at all when he is constantly thirsty. Take a look at this website, this is what I am talking about.

Orphanages:
Danielle and I also want to start orphanages throughout the Far West region of Haiti. These would not be large orphanages such as the one in Port De Paix, rather they would consist of small families of ten to twenty children, an idea which Janeil and Heather, the orphanage directors, came up with for organizing the larger orphanage in Port De Paix. This system would allow the children to be fed and educated in a family group that so many children in Haiti lack. There is also a current discussion of moving the current orphanage in Port De Paix to a location closer to the Far West. This would be a great move and would offer the children not only more room to play but also allow the orphanage to have more room to grow as a program.

This is a picture of one of the boys from the Port De Paix orphanage. He helped Curtis propose to Danielle by writing it in chalk and drawing on the walls in the orphanage. It must have worn him out.

Solidarity Projects:
This broadly termed project is different from any of the above, but at the same time it involves the projects listed above. One of our main goals in Haiti is to produce solidarity, unity amongst the Hatian poor. It is only when people band together and realize their potential that they will be able to accomplish their goals. By forming communities centered around social justice, human rights, and a Christian worldview, we think that Haiti will transform itself. This idea of solidarity also applies to the foreigners working in Haiti. If we cannot promote solidarity amongst the various missions and NGOs working in Haiti then how can we expect the people of the country to do so? We want to spend some time mending the wounds that were caused by disagreements that happened before we were even born. Every group that works in Haiti has the same goal in mind, they just might go about it in a different way, and if we could somehow pull together our strengths and at least act in a civil manner with one another, then Haiti will benefit greatly, which last time I checked was the main idea.

If you are interested in funding any of these projects specifically, or funding Danielle and I in general, please make a check out to Northwest Haiti Christian Mission and write Curtis and Danielle Rogers on a separate note included with the check. Checks can be mailed to:

P.O. Box 829
Versailles, KY 40383

Items donated for any of these projects should be marked “Curtis and Danielle Rogers” and sent to:
